THE RETIRE PLAN · A FREE GUIDE BY HAZIRAH JALIL
How to still have money
when you retire.
Want half a million by 60? Start with the life you want to fund—not just the number.
Work through this guide at your own pace. Choose a starting target, compare timelines and think about what each part of your money needs to do. No PDF, download or account needed.

01 / START WITH THE GOAL
Half a million is a headline.
What do you actually need?
Begin with the monthly income you hope to have after you stop working—not someone else’s round number.
A simple example
BND2,000 a month × 12 months × 20 years
= BND480,000
BND500,000 is a convenient round target for the Reel comparison. It is not a universal retirement target.
Write this in your own notes
- The monthly income you would like in retirement.
- The number of years you want to plan for.
- Your simple starting target: monthly income × 12 × years.
This is only a starting point. It does not yet account for inflation, taxes, pensions, other income or changing expenses. You do not need to enter or send your balances to use this guide.
02 / COMPARE THE TIMELINE
Same target.
Different monthly amount.
These are illustrative monthly contributions to reach BND500,000 at age 60, starting from zero.
| Start age | Years to 60 | Saving only 0% growth | Hypothetical 8% growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 30 | 1,389 | 355 |
| 35 | 25 | 1,667 | 550 |
| 40 | 20 | 2,083 | 879 |
| 45 | 15 | 2,778 | 1,481 |
| 50 | 10 | 4,167 | 2,776 |
What changed? The time available—not the target. The 8% column is a hypothetical growth scenario, not a promised gold return or a recommended gold allocation.
Read the assumptions behind these figures
End-of-month contributions; a steady effective annual return of 8% converted to a monthly rate; no starting balance; no fees or taxes; no inflation adjustment. Real returns vary and capital may lose value. The zero-growth column simply divides the target by the number of monthly contributions.
03 / PUT THE 8% IN CONTEXT
Gold has a history.
It doesn’t have a guaranteed rate.
The World Gold Council reports that gold’s US-dollar price compounded at approximately 8% a year from 1971 to 2023.
That is a long-period USD gold-price statistic. It is not the return in every individual year, a BND-denominated result, or what you will receive from a specific gold product after costs and currency effects.
The historical observation and the forward-looking 8% illustration are different things. Test lower or zero-growth scenarios too.

04 / MAKE IT YOURS
What if you’re 35?
For the example target of BND500,000 by 60, there are 25 years to build it. The comparison above shows BND1,667 a month with no growth, or BND550 a month in the hypothetical 8% scenario.
Neither is automatically your monthly amount. In your own notes, take stock of:
- Your age now and the age you hope to retire.
- Your own simple retirement target.
- Current accessible savings.
- Investments and retirement assets already in place.
- Other retirement income to investigate.
- What you can realistically set aside each month.
Present-day balances and future targets are not automatically comparable. Existing assets and new contributions may grow differently; use this inventory as the basis for a more detailed plan rather than simply subtracting one number from another.
05 / GIVE EACH PART A JOB
Retirement isn’t a gold-only plan.
- Cash
- Accessible money for emergencies and near-term spending needs.
- Investments and retirement contributions
- Potential long-term growth. Diversification matters, and values can fall.
- Gold
- One possible long-term holding. Prices fluctuate; consider costs, liquidity and when you will need the money.
“For me, cash feels spendable. Gold feels like savings I want to keep.”

Write down an amount you could realistically commit to each role. These are planning categories, not a prescribed allocation. Do not use emergency cash to chase a return.
