FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ASB, Tabung Haji, or gold, which is better?
For short-term savings, under 2 years, ASB or Tabung Haji is better. The returns are consistent at around 4% to 5% per year.
But for long-term savings, gold is better. Its value is more secure and is not easily affected by a country’s economic or political situation.
Although gold prices may rise and fall in the short term, the past 20 years show that gold prices have increased by an average of around 10% per year. Gold prices are expected to rise in the long term due to inflation and the weakening of the ringgit.
For short-term savings, save in ASB or Tabung Haji. For long-term savings, save in gold.

Jewellery or pure gold, which is better?
If you are buying gold for savings or investment, gold bars or dinars with 999.9 purity are more worthwhile.
The price per gram is about 15% cheaper compared to jewellery, and the spread, or price difference, is much lower, usually below 10%.
Jewellery is not suitable for savings or investment. It is only suitable for wearing.
The price is higher, workmanship charges are added, and the spread is very high, around 25% to 40%. This makes it less profitable.
What is the difference between a dinar and a gold bar?
Gold bars and dinars have the same profit potential. The price per gram is the same, the spread is the same, and the purity is also the same, 999.9.
The only difference is the shape. A dinar is round, while a gold bar is rectangular. One dinar weighs 4.25 grams.

When is the best time to buy gold?
The best time is when you have money that you can set aside for at least 2 years or more, and you already understand the basics of gold.
Do not wait for the best price, because no one knows when gold is at its lowest until it has already become history.
In the short term, gold prices do rise and fall. But in the long term, gold prices are expected to rise because the purchasing power of paper money continues to decline.
To understand gold price movements, start with your first purchase of at least 1 gram as a benchmark. As long as you hold physical gold and buy it for long-term savings, the risk of loss is very low.

What is the minimum budget to start saving gold?
With Public Gold, you can start saving gold with a budget as low as RM100 through the GAP Gold Account. You can also add to your savings anytime with RM100 for each purchase.
There is no requirement to buy every month.
The smallest item that can be withdrawn from a GAP Account is a 1 gram gold bar with 999.9 purity, available in various designs.
Public Gold releases different 1 gram gold bar designs from time to time. Keep topping up your GAP Account so you do not miss out on a design you like.
Physical gold or GAP Gold Account, which is better?
The best form of gold savings is physical gold that we keep in our own hands. It gives greater peace of mind.
However, to make sure we save consistently, I personally prefer the GAP Gold Account. It is easier and more flexible.
GAP is also physical gold. You can start saving with a budget as low as RM100. Once you have enough grams and want to withdraw physical gold to keep yourself, you can ask Public Gold to post it to you anytime.
How much gold is subject to zakat?
Gold savings are subject to 2.5% zakat if they reach 85 grams, equivalent to 20 dinars, and are kept for at least 1 year based on the Hijri calendar.
Jewellery is also subject to zakat if the total amount of gold exceeds the uruf set by the Islamic Religious Council according to each state.
For more information on zakat calculation, please refer to:

Can I buy directly by walk-in at the nearest Public Gold branch?
Public Gold does not accept walk-in purchases.
For the convenience of more than 1 million customers, Public Gold branches only provide service for customers who want to collect larger gold items that cannot be delivered through GIT, or insured postage. This applies to items of 50 grams / 10 dinars, 42.5 grams, and above.
To collect gold at a branch, you must place an order, make payment, and set an appointment first.
For smaller items, 5 dinars / 20 grams and below, Public Gold will post them directly from HQ Penang using the Gold-in-Transit, or GIT, service.
For purchase instructions, follow the guide HERE.
If the GAP Account owner passes away, how can the gold be claimed?
The beneficiary must go to the nearest Public Gold branch and submit the following documents:
1. Beneficiary’s identity card, or the identity card of the legally authorized representative
2. Death certificate
3. Court order for distribution of assets, which must state the gold balance in the deceased person’s Public Gold Account
4. Letter of administration
Public Gold follows the normal procedure for managing a deceased person’s assets, similar to money in a bank account.
